Porziuncola Chapel is a small shrine located in the St. Francis of Assisi Church in San Francisco. The stone chapel is a scaled replica of the 5th century Porziuncola Chapel in Assisi, Italy, where the Franciscan Order began. Precise measurements and documentation of the original chapel were taken in order to create this three quarters replica. Hand carved plank doors, pews, and marble tile, were all imported from Italy. A team of skilled Italian artists were flown in to complete the fresco paintings, which took them over a month to finish. The 500 sq.ft. stone clad reinforced concrete structure was built with 40 ft-deep concrete piers in order to meet the seismic requirements for current building codes.
